Rose and I were both born in the Pelly district of Saskatchewan, and we received our education there. I lost both my parents when I was very young. Rose's parents were farmers in the district.
After leaving school, I worked on construction for a few years. Rose stayed at home to help her parents on the farm during the war when help was hard to get.
In 1947 we moved to Toronto, where I worked on the construction of the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) stadium. When the job was completed, we returned to Pelly and I started to work for the Pelly Co-Op and worked there from 1948 to 1951 as a clerk and driver.
Our eldest son, Fred, and our only daughter, Gerri, were both born in Pelly.
I started to work for United Grain Growers in 1952 in Pelly, and believe it or not, I was late for work my first day as it was the day Gerri was born. We were transferred to Isabella, Manitoba in 1954. Fred and Gerri both went to school in Isabella. Ross was born while we were at Isabella. Rose and I took an active part in both rinks, hall committee, all sports and the sports days.
I was transferred to Westbourne, Manitoba in 1962 where we continued to be involved in all sports and other activities in the community. Bruce was born while we were in Westbourne.
In 1967 I was transferred to Carnduff. That was the year the rink, Legion and Catholic Church were built, as well as some new residential homes. Bruce, our youngest boy, was three and Ross was six. He started school that year. Gerri was in Grade 10. Our oldest son, Fred, was going to Tech School in Winnipeg taking electricity. Bruce, Ross and Gerri finished school in Carnduff.
I worked for United Grain Growers for 36 years and retired in 1988. Rose worked for the Post Office for 14 years and was janitor at the Bank of Montreal for 25 years. I was on the School Board, Rink Board, am currently on the Donor's Choice Board and also an Honorary Member of the Legion since 1976. Rose belongs to the Legion Ladies Auxiliary and is still active in the Legion.
We built our new home in 1983 and are enjoying our retirement in it. In 1997 we celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary. Our children held a "Come and Go" Tea for us at the United Church and organized a dinner and social evening for family and friends at the Legion. Family came from as far east as Ontario and as far west as B.C. to join in our celebration; it was a weekend we will always remember.
The children have moved on: Fred married Donna Batters from Portage la Prairie in 1972. They have two sons: Jim born on January 9, 1975 and Brian born July 21, 1977.
Gerri married Michael Anderson in 1992 and they live in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Michael is the son of the late Dwight and Lilian Anderson of Carnduff.
Ross married Linda Day in 1982. Linda is the daughter of Tony and Vi Day of Carnduff. They have two girls: Rachelle born November 14, 1991 and Kiana born June 5, 1996. Ross and Linda live in Carnduff.
Our youngest, Bruce, married Lou Ann Collier in 1985. Lou Ann is the daughter of Jack and Joyce Collier of Gainsborough. They have two sons: Kyle born September 7, 1986 and Colin born August 16, 1992. Bruce and Lou Ann live in Souris, Manitoba.
Rose and I enjoy our family very much and always look forward to our get togethers.

I worked for United Grain Growers for 36 years and retired in Carnduff, Saskatchewan in 1988. Rose worked for the Post Office for 14 years and was a janitor at the Bank of Montreal for 25 years. I was on the School Board, Rink Board, and Donor's Choice Board. I also have been a member of the Legion for 25 years and have served on the Legion Executive for 25 years. Rose belongs to the Legion Ladies Auxiliary. We built our new home in 1983 and are enjoying our retirement in it. Rose and I have been active in the community all our lives - doing volunteer work for the Legion, Church, Golf Course and other community fund-raisers. We enjoy our family very much and always look forward to our get togethers.
Our eldest son, Fred and his wife Donna and their sons Jim and Brian, have resided in Morden, Manitoba since 1977. Fred has worked for Manitoba Hydro for 26 years and presently is an Electrical Inspector. Donna is a Learning Assistant for the School Division. As their children were growing up, they were definitely a "hockey family". Both of their sons played hockey and so most weekends and evenings were spent at the rink. During the summer, they all loved to go camping. Fred and Donna are active in the community and in their spare time golf. Their eldest son, Jim, is 24 and is in his third year on Lineman Training program. He enjoys playing hockey and golf and Fred and Donna still travel to most of his games. Their youngest son, Brian, is 22 years old. He has a degree in Physical Education and is continuing on in Education at the University of Manitoba. Brian's time is taken up at University and in the summer he works in Morden. He enjoys golf and cycling.
Our daughter, Gerri, resides in Winnipeg and has worked for Manitoba Hydro for 25 years. In 1992 she married Michael Anderson. Michael was born and raised in Carnduff, Saskatchewan. He was an electronics technician in the Armed Forces for 22 years, retiring in 1990. Presently, Michael works for Radio Shack. Both Gerri and Michael are involved in their local Legion.
Our son, Ross, attended Red River Community College in Winnipeg taking an electrical course and later on refrigeration and air-conditioning. On August 6, 1982 he married Linda Day of Carnduff, Saskatchewan. They have two daughters: Rachelle Dawn born November 14, 1991 and Kiana Rae born June 5, 1996. Rachelle is in figure skating, ball, and golfing. As for Kiana, she keeps busy trying to do what her big sister does. Ross works for Border-line Housing as a maintenance man at Sunset Haven Nursing Home in Carnduff. In his spare time he operates a little business called Apperley Refrigeration, which is doing all kinds of refrigeration service as well as air-conditioning work. Linda works for Fast Trucking Service. In the summer of 1999, they started their own Saskatoon U-Pick business. Ross is in his second term as a member of the council for the Town of Carnduff. He also has had an active interest in hockey and has coached Bantam hockey, managed a Midget "AA" team for four years, and since 1998 has been the Manager of the Red Devils Senior hockey team. Linda is also involved in the community and has served on the Executive of the local Theatre for a number of years.
Our youngest son, Bruce, graduated from High School in 1982. He worked for a few years for Fast Trucking Service. On April 12, 1985 he married Lou Ann Collier of Gainsborough, Saskatchewan. On January 3, 1986 he started employment with Manitoba Hydro. Work moved them from Winnipeg to Altona and then to Souris, Manitoba where they still reside. They have two sons, Kyle Andrew born September 7, 1986 and Colin James born August 16, 1992. Lou Ann worked for a few years as a hairdresser and then stayed home with her children. She started to work part-time once the children were in school. Lou Ann presently works for the Royal Bank in Souris. As a family they enjoy golfing, fishing, camping and travelling. Both Bruce and Lou Ann are involved in the community. Bruce has been a member of the Souris Volunteer Fire Department for over 6 years and is on the Executive of the Souris and Glenwood Golf Course.
