- Brooks, William and Marguerite (Wicker)
William Glenmore Brooks was born on November 24, 1891, in Bruce County, Ontario. His parents moved to Saskatchewan and farmed at Nut Mountain. William (Billie) served in the Navy during the first world war and was a veteran guard in the second world war.
Marguerite Vivian Wicker was born on November 18, 1907, at Peterborough, Ont. to John and Tillie Wicker. In 1911, they came west by excursion train to try a new life farming on the prairies, taking up a homestead fourteen miles south of Webb, Sask. Marguerite moved to Saskatchewan with her parents and siblings. She went out working at the age of fourteen.
Billie and Marguerite met when he was working as a steam engineer for Fred Collin's threshing outfit. They were married at Swift Current in the spring of 1926. After they were married, they worked for Henry Carleton at Neville. Later, they came back to work at the VanKel Mine in the Silver Craig district.
In 1934, Billie drove a hayrack and horses, with all their belongings, back to Kelvington. All they owned was the horses, twelve hens, and a few clothes. Bert Wicker traveled with Bill. On their way, they spent one night at Davidson by a farm, as one of the mares was having a colt. The farmer took the mare and colt in payment to bring the children and Marguerite back to Kelvington. It took seventeen days to make the trip.
In 1945, they bought land from little George Pugh which was located east of Endeavor in the Brookview District. They raised purebred pigs. Bill got the farmers in the area to form a club so they could get government bulls in so they could raise better cattle. The farmers were in full agreement.
In 1956, due to poor health, Billie and Marguerite sold their land to Eli Lupuliak and retired to Preeceville.
Bill passed away in 1964. Marguerite is now residing in Bienfait, Sask.
Bill and Marguerite had nine children.
Glenmore Henry was born on April 7, 1927, at Webb, Sask. In 1935, his family moved north east of Glengariff School, where they farmed N.E. 2-36-11. Glen was educated at Glengariff School. He worked for farmers in the district and then worked on a bulldozer for his uncle, Norman Brooks. On September 29, 1952, Glen married Anne and they moved to The Pas, Man. He worked on a ranch there until he had surgery. He then trained to be a nurse's aide and worked at the Catholic Hospital at The Pas from 1953 to 1956. Glen and Anne moved to Nelson, B.C., where he worked in the hospital there for ten years. Glen and Anne have four children: Cecile, Gloria, Bernard, and Vernon. After Glen and Anne separated, he moved to Debolt, Alta., where he worked on a bulldozer for his brother Jack. Glen started cooking in camps in the oilfields in northern Canada. A serious ear infection forced him to move to Calgary, where he worked in the kitchen of the Ogden Branch of the Canadian Legion until he retired.
Abbie Margaret was born on December 23, 1928, at Swift Current. She moved with her family to the Glengariff School District, where she was educated. She dropped out of school when her family moved to the Brookview District east of Endeavor, in 1945. She worked at housekeeping for several families for two years in the Kelvington and Canora districts. She moved to Hanna, Alta., and did housekeeping there until she moved to Calgary and started working for Alberta Government Telephones. She then moved to Edmonton, and worked for North West Industries. She met Roger Daigle from Quebec in Edmonton, and they were married on December 22, 1956. She was a housewife from then on. They moved to Whitehorse, YT, then back to Edmonton, Prince George, B.C., Nakusp, B.C., Terrace, B.C., Val Dor, PQ and then to Prince Rupert, B.C. They had three children: Denise Catherine born on December 15, 1959; Gene born on November 14, 1962 and passed away on June 24, 1992; and Rene Robert born on January 30, 1968. Roger owns RD Refrigeration and Air Conditioning. They moved to Parksville, B.C. on Vancouver Island, in 1995.
Jack William was born on May 15, 1931. He remembers the more than three mile walk to Glengariff School, where he was educated. He recalls hiding in the bush and behind the woodpile from the teacher. He enjoyed the Sports Days and Christmas concerts. He attended Glengariff School from 1938 to 1945 at which time the family moved to the Brookview District in the Endeavor area. In 1951, he moved to Gleichen, Alta, where he met and married Lillian in 1955. They have one daughter Lorie, and one son Warren. They also have five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. After leaving Gleichen, he lived in Calgary and then moved to the Peace River area where he was a heavy equipment contractor and farmed until 1971. They then moved back to Irricana, Alta where he owned a hotel for three years and farmed in the Drumheller area until 1986. They moved back to Calgary and have now retired in the Strathmore area east of Calgary.
Wellington Delbert was born on March 28, 1933, at home on the farm in the Webb, Sask. area. Delbert attended Glengariff School from 1940 to 1945 at which time his family moved to the Brookview District east of Endeavor. He continued his education there. After school Delbert worked on road construction in the Regina area. He married Olga Rein and they had five children: Cheryl, Wally, twins Penny and Patsy, and Denise. They made their home in Regina. Delbert was killed in a vehicle accident just out of Regina in August, 1966. He is buried in Regina.
Joyce May was born on May 14, 1935. She passed away in 1936.
James Walter was born on May 23, 1937 at home on N.E. 2-36-11. He attended Glengariff School for two years and then his family moved to the Brookview District east of Endeavor. He continued his education at the Brookview School. About 1956 Jim joined the Canadian Armed Forces at Yorkton, Sask. He was stationed in Germany for three years. While in Germany he met and married Louise on October 5, 195? After returning to Canada they were stationed in Calgary, Alta. After his discharge, Jim worked for Canadian Meat Packers for about ten years. After the plant closed, Jim cooked at one of the golf courses in Calgary. Jim and Louise had three children - Margaret, born on August 28, 1960, David born on July 22, 1961, and Annette born on October 8, 1966. Jim had one of his legs amputated. He is now divorced and retired in Lacombe.
Annabelle Marie was born on March 24, 1941. She moved with her parents to the Brookview District east of Endeavor. She was educated at the Brookview School.
William Wayne was born on July 16, 1945. He was educated at the Brookview School. He now resides in Bienfait, Sask.
Roy Edward was born on February 27, 1950. He was born in the Brookview District. He was educated at the Brookview School. He now resides in Moosomin, Sask. [1]
