- Torok, John and Helen (Szalma) by Vera Kostuk
My parents were John and Helen Torok. Their birthplace was Hungary. My father went to Pottsville, Pennsylvania first to visit an Uncle in 1907 and stayed there to work in an iron foundry and my mother went there in 1908. In 1911 they came to Plunkett to get a homestead. They read about Saskatchewan in the newspapers and they came on their own to my uncle's, Stebve Balint, who had a homestead east and north of Plunkett. They had lots of trouble getting here, not knowing what to do. They travelled all the way by rail, arriving on October 11, 1911. They filed on a homestead in the winter of 1912 and didn't know what the land was like until spring . . . it had lots of stones. The place wa five miles east of Plunkett on the NE 1/4 16-34-24-2. They built a sod house and built a better house and barn the following year.
In the early days of homesteading, my father was very good with the gun and he would shoot ducks, rabbits and cranes which were plentiful. We shared it with the other folks around, so we never went hungry.
The most hardships were the first two winters. To get enough firewood my father hauled 15 miles from the north bush and with only oxen to drive. He got his first two horse in 1916 but used oxen to break the land for six years and then was able to get more horses.
We had four very bad prairie fires. The grass was high and burned fast. Our first barn burned as the hay and straw around it started and we couldn't do much to stop it.
The first Clover Bar School wa built 1/4 mile north in 1917. After we had our school built, my father was one of the first trustees and was until his death in 1930. We were always happy and excited about the school picnics. We had a new teacher every year: it was hard for them as we couldn't talk English the first years. Teachers I remember are Miss Garey who taught 3 months and got married to Leander Biehn, and Miss Sampson, Miss O'Reily, and Miss McKinnen, who each taught one term. Then our school burned in 1920 and school was held at a farm house. The new school was built in 1921. The school was ready for 1922; it opened in February, with teacher Rovis Reese, who taught one year. My other teachers were Miss Edith Wiley, one year Miss Helen Eley, Miss Joan Eley, Miss Norah McMeans; and Miss Elsie Rumbe in 1927 was my last teacher when I got my Grade 8 diploma.
The flu was very bad and I was six years old at the time. I never got sick at all, but the rest of the family were all sick. I had to keep the fire going and all I did was give them hot tea, which I made. My uncle came 3 days later to see us and found everyone sick, but me.
Ther are 3 girls and one boy in our family. One girl died in 1916; her name was Ethel and she was 1 1/2 years old. Another sister, Anne (Ball) died in 1972. My brother, John, the youngest, moved to Alberta in 1945 and farmed for 22 years; he sold our farm and is now living in Lethbridge. I (Vera) am the only one in Saskatchewan now. I was born 1/2 mile northeast of Plunkett on Sec. 14-34-25-2 and in 1931 I married Joseph Kostuk. [7]
