- Apperley, Frank and Mary (Bowerman)
Frances H. Apperley (Frank), his wife, Mary (Bowerman) of Dunedin, and their two young children, a son and a daughter, came to the N1/2 Lot 21, Conc. 14, Tecumseth, around 1880. They spent several years here. They cleared the lower part of the farm which was all bush, with the help of the neighbour's oxen. In the process, several arrow heads and a skinning stone as well as some little china doll heads, were found.
There were four more children born - Mabel, Harry, Gordon and Cora. Harry and Gordon served in the First World War, 1914-1918, then went to Toronto to their respective occupations.
Frank Apperley took great interest in the community, church and the school board. He was secretary and treasurer and trustee of the school board for a while at S.S. No. 14. Around the turn of the century, he assessed the Township of Tecumseth.
In 1906, D.K. Ross, of Toronto, sold a parcel of land to Frank Apperley, Lot 18, Conc. 15, known as 'Clover Hill', for the sum of $900.00. The Apperleys and their younger children moved to this location. Through the years Frank bought three more pieces of land, the last was to the east of the home farm. He bought this in 1914 from Jane Cawthra, a relative of Sir William Mulock's, for $1,600.00. Frank and Mary Apperley lived here until shortly before their deaths. Mary died in 1938, at the age of 82, and her husband Frank, in 1940, at the age of 86.
In 1911, Frank's older son Fred, and his wife Annie, bought the home place (Lot 21, Conc. 14). There were two children, a daughter Helen, and a son, Harry, who died in infancy. Helen married and had five children.
Fred was very interested in agriculture. He kept several Percheron horses, which were his pride and joy. He won many ribbons with them. He was also very interested in public affairs, and he was Reeve of Tecumseth Township from 1941 to 1944. His wife Annie died in 1954.
Fred was getting on in years, so the farm was taken over by his grandsons. Part of the farm was sold in 1972, with the exception of two 10 acre lots - one going to grandson Frederic Elines and his wife, Fay, and their two sons, and the other to grandson Brian Elines and his wife, Joy, and their daughter and son. Grandson Paul, his wife Cheryl, and their two sons, settled in Alberta and granddaughters Sandra and Elaine, and their families, are in Manitoba.
Fred Apperley moved to Cookstown with his daughter in late 1972. In 1976 he passed away at the age of 95. Part of the farm is still owned by the fifth generation. [12]
