- Macey, Henry and Anna (Butt)
Henry Macey was born on September 25, 1843 in London, England, and died in March 1908 in Oxbow. He married Anna Frances Butt on February 27, 1870, in the Parish of Hackney, County of Middlesex, England. She was born October 20, 1848 and died in Winnipeg on December 27, 1921. She was buried in Brookside Cemetery. Anna was a governess, a midwife and a tailoress. Henry was a blacksmith, one of seven generations of blacksmiths.
In 1884, Henry and Anna brought their seven children to Oxbow where Henry worked as a blacksmith.
In 1885, Henry went with General Middleton's force as a blacksmith (Civilian), working with 17 other farriers looking after the Army's horses during the Riel Rebellion.
Henry had a wonderful singing voice and was a very sharp and shrewd person with his customers and family.
Henry and Anna had three more girls after their arrival in Canada. Anna taught Sunday school and sang and played the organ at both the Anglican and Presbyterian churches.
Of their children, the eldest was Alice, born May 10, 1871 in London, England. She married James Thomas Wiggins on March 17, 1888. Alice died on July 9, 1914. They had ten children of which two are living.
The eldest boy was Percy Henry, born August 18, 1872 in London and died August 7, 1884 at Oxbow.
Charles Reginald Macey was one of twins born on February 3, 1875 at Miles End Olde Town, England. His twin died at birth. Charles died in 1944 at Minnedosa. Charlie was of the Plymouth Brethren Faith. He married Isabella Maud Victoria McRae, born December 27, 1885 and died in 1974 in Winnipeg. Charles worked with his father in the smithy in Oxbow from age 13 to 17 years. He worked for the C.P.R. for 46 years in Minnedosa and became a yard foreman. They had 13 children and seven are living.
Walter James Macey was born January 17, 1877 in London and died on March 28, 1877.
Joseph Henry Macey was born December 19, 1877 in London and died on December 18, 1946 and was buried in Rosetown. Joe was a school teacher for ten years, having attended Normal School and taught school at Oxbow and Alameda. He started to go deaf and so decided to homestead at Rosetown in November 1905. He first lived in a sod shack that he had to build.
Joe married Elizabeth Margaret Gardner of England at Regina and had three children, two of whom are living. Joe homesteaded with Victor Wiggins in 1905 on Adjacent quarters of Section 34. Joe was the first farmer to divide his land into ten acre strips to stop drifting. Joe was an ardent sportsman; he loved football, soccer and skating. He and Ernie Bishop composed a football song.
Emily Muriel Macey was born on December 13, 1879 in London and died November 29, 1909 in childbirth. She was buried at Arthur Vale Cemetery, Innisfail, Alberta. Emily married William John Darrough, a farmer, on December 3, 1902 at Oxbow. Emily was a dressmaker and a homemaker. She sang and played the organ in church. There were two children and one is living.
Edith Frances Macey was born January 12, 1882 in London and died a spinster in Vancouver, B.C. Edith also sang in the choir as a child. She taught school at 16 years of age. Later, she became a nurse and served with the Army in World War I.
Daisy Hope Macey was born September 29, 1885 at Alameda. She worked as a telephone operator for some years and was also a dressmaker. She married Victor Wiggins on December 23, 1908 at Oxbow and they farmed at Wartime, Saskatchewan. Daisy died on December 11, 1966 and was buried in the Elrose Cemetery. Victor was a member of the Masonic Lodge and both were members of the O.E.S. They had four children.
Florence Anna Macey was born July 17, 1887 at Oxbow and died in 1943. She married Andrew Mills and they lived in Winnipeg. They had six children and five are still living.
Jessie Gertrude Macey was born November 18, 1891 at Oxbow. She taught school at 16 years of age and then took up nursing and served as an Army nurse in World War I. She spent a period of her life in Hawaii. In later life she married a widower, Shelton Gowe of Toronto, with three children and they lived at Clarkson, Ontario and Port Credit.
