Mr. C.E. Scribner,
Backus, Minnesota

Dear Sir:

Yours of the 10th inst. is received. There seem to be differences of opinion among those who are acquainted with Mrs. Clarke as to the advisability of returning Ellen to her. We certainly want to do what is best for the girl and to do no injustice to the mother. Would it not be better to wait until after Mrs. Clark has started her restaurant and ascertained whether she can successfully carry on such an enterprise? It has been suggested to me that it would be unwise for Ellen to be taken to the hotel where here mother is working, on account of the surroundings.

Ellen is still here and is getting along nicely.

Yours truly,
G.A. Merrill
