Text | Raymond Hoffman, 92, a longtime Buford farmer, died at his daughter's home in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada on Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 25, 2012. His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Williston by Father Joshua Ehli. Interment will follow in Trenton Cemetery in Trenton. An Evening Vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Trenton. Raymond Francis Hoffman was born to Albert and Elizabeth (Felhofer) Hoffman on Sept. 25, 1920. He grew up on the family farm near Savage, Mont., attended Washington School and was a member of the 4-H Club and the boxing club. As a young man, he worked at the Hoffmanville Beet Dump and for various farmers. He first farmed on his own on the neighboring Pearl Barker place and then on the May place nearby. Ray attended a short course in agriculture at Montana State University in Bozeman. In May of 1942, Raymond married Lucy Watterson of Fairview, Mont. A daughter, Judith Ann, was born in 1943; all of his eight other children were born after the family moved to the Buford-Trenton Irrigation Project in the spring of 1946. At that time, there was no electricity, running water or phone line. Raymond raised sugar beets, alfalfa and grain. He kept cattle on pasture, fed his own calves and fed lambs. In the early Buford-Trenton years, he organized a team of teenage boys for the Rural Baseball League and was a catcher on the Trenton baseball team. Raymond encouraged his family to take part in the life of the community, actively supporting Trenton School, Happy Valley 4-H clubs and St. John's Catholic Church, where he was a trustee for 35 years. He managed his farm until he suffered a stroke in 1986, then his sons and grandsons took over the farming. Raymond was predeceased by his son Michael in 1977. He is survived by Lucy, his wife of 70 years; and his children, Judy Flynn of Baltimore (children Charlotte, Paul and Jefferson); Tracy Clausen of Baltimore (husband Charles, children Lucas, Greta, and Elsa); David Hoffman of Buford (wife Sheila, children Christopher, Anne Marie, John and Kathren); Douglas Hoffman of Buford (wife Anna, children Elizabeth, Andrew, Nicholas, Brandon, Jessica and Levi); Maggie Halford of Regina (husband Tim, children Ian, Bess, and Lucien); Mary Frances Baltich of Concord (husband Frank, children Jake and Jennifer); Rita Sveet of Rugby (husband Rodney, children Erik, Leif, Mary and Lucy; and Raymond Hoffman of Baltimore (husband Michael, son Gunnar). He has 26 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. Friends may visit www.eversonfh.com to share remembrances of Raymond.
